Topic 5b - Climate Models and Data Assimilation

In order to run the most accurate weather forecasting and climate models, it is essential to have accurate “initial conditions” from which to start the simulations. Satellites can provide near continuous measurements related to a wide range of Earth system variables, whose degree of uncertainty is typically quite well understood, and these can act as a key source of data for model setups. The data itself can also play an important role in the evaluation of climate models, for example by supplying robust observational datasets spanning more than a decade which climate simulations can be compared to.

In this video, Dr Melanie Ades explains some of the aspects of how weather or climate models and data are used to build simulations of the Earth system that can provide the most reliable forecasts.
