1c – The role of citizen science in Big Data Analytics
Citizen science involves members of the general public collaborating with scientists on a project. There is a wide range of applications where citizen science can play a very important role including humanitarian applications, land use change, and biodiversity and conservation observations.
The widespread adoption of mobile devices has contributed to a growth in citizen science over the last decade, as a large number of project involve the use of citizen participation via mobile phones. For example the EU LandSense project allows citizens to participate in ongoing cases using their own devices (e.g. mobile phones and tablets), through interactive reporting and gaming applications, and the FotoQuest Go project which involves citizens using their phones to monitor landuse.
